Not good

So I paid rent today at the apartment complex. While I was there, the person I report to, the actives coordinator, said she needed to talk to me before I left.

They've decided to cancel / put on hiatus until October, the Self Defense class. She said they're putting the party boat in the water this week, and this way I can have some time off and enjoy the summer.

I know it's really about the numbers, and who shows up to the class.

It is what it is. Down side is, my rent is going up 240.00 because of it. Instead of paying directly they credit my pay to my rent. I think I've said that before here.

So the things I was planing on doing with that money, like go to a kettlebell class with Sandy Sommer RKC, is out now too.

I really can't wait to get out of debt and start having money to do things. Even money to save, more than $5.00 a week would be nice.

The only good things coming out of this, my parrot is going to have more time to spend with me on Wednesdays, I can watch Mythbusters instead of DVRing it, and I don't have to buy a mat to practice break falls on, at least not right now.

stiff and sore

So I'm going to try and make Sandy Sommer's class in Delaware in June. I know I'm not in shape for it right now, last night proved it.

So to get into shape, here is the current workout plan. Hopefully I can stick to it for the next 8 weeks. For the next 4 weeks this is how it should look.

Monday: ETK, 100 push-ups, Yoga
Tuesday: ETK, Martial Arts
Wednesday: 100 push-ups, Self Defense
Thursday: ETK, Martial Arts
Friday: ETK, 100 push-ups
Saturday: Martial Arts, pull ups
Sunday: rest, or play around.

Sprinkled in the mix will be Sit ups, squats and pull-ups.

The ETK, is the Art of Strength Enter the Kettlebell workbook.

Yesterday:
36 push-ups in 45 seconds and 31 situps in 60 seconds, was looking at the MCOLES Physical requirements, because they were talking about using the MCOLES test for the black belt test. The current red belt testing requirements, the three ranks below black belt, are harder, minus the run.

Yoga was a "light night" 2 new people. Not that light means easy, just not power yoga.

ETK: 24kg kettlebell for swings, 16kg for Halos. My back was hurting from the Yoga and sit ups, after I got done, it was stiff but pain free. Still stiff.

5 rounds in the 10 minute warm up; wall squats x10, halo @ 16kg x10, pumps x10.
7 rounds in 12 minutes of 20 x swings and 1 minute active rest.

It was hard. But I owned it. I'll do the Turkish getups before Martial arts tonight.

And all this so I can be in shape in June, for the class, and my next martial arts test. I don't want to be me right now. Not even sure if I'm going to make the class in June, but looking like I will.

tap tap

Is this thing on?

So 2 months in a row, the complex has screwed up paying me. They don't bother to try and credit my account until after I ask them where it is. The site manager is a hag when it comes to it too. The payment agent tells me the credit hasn't been applied, which it is supposed to on the first, and when they ask the manager the manager says I can pay the full amount. I say no, you'll be paid after I get my credit.

I'm going to talk to a lawyer this week. See if I should start sending them invoices in the mail, and failure to pay on the 1st, which their agent said they would, add a 10% late fee.

I'm getting tired of this crap. Should be simple, there is a bloody contract (the proposal they accepted), I even cut one class to save them money, and get my time back (Due to lack of enrollment).

Don't know what to think

this is going to be long. Sorry for your RSS feeds.

If you remember, when I started getting the Self Defense class together, I didn't really think I was the right person to teach it. Part of me still feels that way. While I have 20+ years experience in martial arts, I don't have a black belt. I'm close, but meh. I've worked as a bouncer, and a contract body guard / crowd control / security (granted it was 2 weekends a year, for the most part, and I only did it for a couple of years).

Recently I decided to axe the women only class. Because no one shows up for it. I wasn't told I had to yet, no body had hinted that I needed to start thinking about it, etc. I'm going to slide the co-ed class down to that slot, and maybe expand it, maybe not.

Tonight, a lady showed up for the women's class. I'm carrying a box, I juggled it and the blocker to get in the door, she stood at the top of the stairs, and didn't move even when I said excuse me. Granted she had no idea what was in the box, and it wasn't heavy, but I think it's common curiosity to at the very least move. She just looked, and then turned back and waited for the person at the sign in desk who wasn't there.

So I walked around her, hard to do, considering I'm a decent size guy, and I had a box in my hand. (The kind offices get paper in), with a foam blocker on top of it. I went into the room we train in, put the equipment down, and walked back out.

Snooty like, she asked if I was one of the self defense instructors, I said yes. She asked me if I knew who was working the sign in desk. I said no, but I was going to find out. I came back with the desk worker. The lady told me that she was there to watch the class. I said you have to play. My rules are you come to the class, you train. I don't like people sitting watching. (I can adjust the class for new people). I started cleaning the room, because the group in it before us, left mud all over the floor. At 7:33 she comes over and asks, don't you think you should get the class started? I said I would, if she was ready, other wise I have to wait for someone to show up. Her response was "Maybe the problem is the instructor". The two co-ed students how had just arrived heard her say it, the security guard / desk person heard her stay it. The security guard wanted to ask her to leave at that point but isn't allowed to (apartment complex clubhouse, can't kick out residents unless they're being destructive).

She asked what made me qualified to teach, I said I've been doing martial arts for 24 years (this is my 24th year), I've worked as a bouncer and a body guard. She didn't like my reason for not allowing shoes or jewlery (safety for yourself and others, even shown how a kick could be bad, and told her my brother broke his leg kicking recently). She didn't like that I had a guy and girl training together. Told her, it had the same safety rules as the martial arts school I go to. She kept insisting that women and men fight differently, I disagree (and have years of MA to teach me that). She asked me the type of people I body guarded for, I told her, tv and movie stars. She asked me about and your way protected them, then got up, said she came for a self defense class not a dance class.

Needless to say, it left me in a bad place. I've never felt like I should be teaching the class to begin with, my masters said I could, and my students (the 2 that keep coming back) think I do a great job. I wonder if I'm teaching them the right things and the right ways (there is no wrong on either), and if I should be teaching them other things than what I am (I do need to cover ground more, but want to wait for mats, which I don't want the complex to order if I only have 2 students).

So half the class the T and E were trying to get me to blow off the lady's criticism. But I guess they liked the later stuff. I showed a little ground stuff tonight. How to get an attacker off you. E didn't think it would work against a big guy. I'm 240 (she was talking bigger). Had her try it, and I went flying, and it was all her.

The security guard told me I'm a good teacher from what she's seen (she wants to take the class, but ends up having to work). She also said the lady was in the day before causing problems too. But it's still enough to bother me. I know I should let it go, but when you already wonder if you're doing the right thing, and get comments like she left tonight, it doesn't make you happy.

Injuries update

So as I said before, I hyper extended my ankle in January, by having about 420 lbs on it, with it bent at a funny angle. I've broken (hair line fracture with a hyper extension) the same ankle my senior year in high school (1995). Which is really part of the main reason I didn't apply to the NAVY after high school (I didn't think I'd really amount to much in my adult life. Wow was I wrong).

Being it was winter and the apartment complex I live at not really keeping the parking lot in great shape, lots of black ice, I kept aggravating it by slipping on the ice. I'd never fall, but my legs would go out from under me, and either stop on pavement, or stop when my legs to the extent of my stretch. But each time, I'd feel the a sharp pain in my ankle.

In February, I finally got the time to go get a brace for it. It took about 3 weeks of trying. Between getting off work late, rushing to class, and trying to stay off my feet as much as possible, it just didn't work out to well trying to get it.

The first martial arts class I wore it to, the second time I wore it and I only wear it for training, I didn't get my toes pulled back far enough for a kick, and jammed (most likely broke) my big toe. There is also a problem across the top of my foot from the brace, where the brace ends. not sure if it's stress or what, from the limited movement of my foot while in the brace.

Between the two injuries, I've found it hard to work out. Even body weight drills hurt those spots. Burpees were like being smashed on that toe every time I kicked back, push ups, had to be done on one leg (been there before too), doing squats bothered the ankle (which I talked about here before). Even KB swings bothered it. Yoga and MA haven't been much fun either. SD hasn't been too bad, because I can stand around most of the time and not do the workout with the students.

Thursday I tried to do MA without the brace, and ended up having to put the brace on 20 minutes into the class. One of the 5th gups (green belts) said he could tell my ankle was bothering me, because he was taking longer steps than I was (he's shorter than me).

Last week I did a set of burpees, and man did it hurt bother the toe, it probably would have been worse if I hadn't been wearing my shoes at the time.

I've done KB swings the last 2 days. For the first time in over a month. They still bother the ankle, and burpees still bother the toe. I've lost a bit of ground, but hope to make it back up quickly.

What brought this up, was an RKC friend of mine (Sandy Sommer) asking if I was going to do the Dragon Door cert, and asked if I've been doing any of the workouts he's sent me.

Sadly I haven't, and I feel bad about that. that reminds me, Anthony C asked me to take part in his burpee challenge but I can't do that either. At least not yet.

I do have a couple of drills that Sandy sent me saved, and I make it a point to read them when he sends them out. I just can't wait to be able to do things again, injury free. I'll have ground to make up, but once I do, this will be a great year.

Although, I have been able to keep my morning weight in weight below 240 all weekend. Sometimes it's the small winds that keep you going.

7-days

Last Monday was yoga. It was hard. I couldn't keep up. My feet hurt. It was my first day back after 2 weeks off. I don't do Yoga on Mondays. I use some stances for stretching later, but not focused on the breathing or caring when I do the stretch.

Tuesday Martial Arts. It was good. However, during free fighting, I caught a back fist in the jaw. He throws them all the time, and almost never connects. It wasn't even hard, but he hit the sweet spot. Right between the bottom of the jaw and the ear. Where the jaw bends up to connect to the skull. When he hit, I saw stars, and both ears started to ring. Then I got really really dizy. Ended up sitting out the rest of the class. The jaw is still a little tender to the touch but not much.

Wednesday's Self Defense class went much better. The ladies class had yet another new member. I taught her how to do the basics. Hopefully she'll come back. The second class was back to full strength. They learned one step fighting. The first 3. We'll do more of that this week.

Thursday was martial arts test night. 2 people tested. I was not in that group. The third Dan said to make them hurt when I was told to do the warm up my the master. We did lots of body weight drills. Then we did lots of kicks. Lots and lots of kicks. 2 minute drill on the B.O.B. Then we practiced some other kicks.

Friday I did some pull ups.

Saturday, lots of basic motions, then the rest of the class was all about the Bo Staff. I was told I'll probably be expected to train around July. Which is a problem. I need to get in better shape first. I said I won't take my next test until I can fit in a size 5 uniform. That means at least 20 lbs, in 16 weeks. And I'm hoping my numbers are right. I don't want test in a uniform without patches, and I don't want to cut the patches off my size 5s.

Sunday, more pull ups and some extra body weight drills.

Tonight, Yoga mixed with Palaties. I feel more worked out tonight than I did last week, even though last week was harder. That was on top of going up and down the 12 flights of stairs when I took my brother to the hospital today. I noticed it when I tried to go up to the "Adult" section at the library. I started climbing the second set of stairs, after the first landing (only 2 floors) and my legs started screaming and I was wondering why I was on the steps.

I also tried to do some burpees today at work. Saw a better way to do them, but when I kicked back, that toe I was talking about above... it hurt when it hit the ground.

I don't know about the self defense class

I'm not too sure about the class. I went to that seminar over the weekend. And they taught, in my opinion, junk.

I know some of the people I work with say they like my teaching. I was asked tonight by the coordinator if I still wanted to teach it, since my first month teaching ended tonight.

I do want to keep teaching it, but last week, I hurt at least one of the female students. The one in the women only class. We were doing grab break aways, and I didn't try to hurt her, but something in her wrist popped.

The second class, I was trying to have the woman in that break the re-breakable board. I think I had her try too many times though. She didn't show up tonight.

The guy from the co-ed class showed up early. Since there was no one there for the women's class, we started early. He liked it... About half way through what would have been 2 hours training (it took me some time to get the ankle brace on), we did some knife and club techniques. He wanted to, been asking for 2 weeks to do some more. I would have preferred to cover it near the end of the class, but we did it in the middle.

We have rubber knives but they still hurt if you get hit. Anyway, I had his arm barred, in a standing position. Showed him how to do the bar, but he didn't think it would work if someone was fighting you on it. We're standing wrestling, and yeah he couldn't move, and I said and now all I have to do is straighten my leg against yours, and push. I've done this more times than I can count in martial arts. Didn't do it hard, didn't do it forcefully, and we both went down. His knee was swelling up, when he left. pretty bad, you could see it through his jeans.

My ankle hurts even more, because when his knee went, the way we went down, and since it was right to right, guess what got trapped and twisted under him.

I'm wearing one of those sock style braces right now. doesn't seem to do much though. Going to wear it all night, or close to it, to give it some more support.

I just fear that if I keep hurting people, and I'm not trying too, that I'll have no one wanting to come train under me. My confidence is shook right now is all.

busy.

Last week we had 2 people let go from where I work at. Right now I'm going through the first one's boxes. Oy. It has been rather interesting.

I still have todo the other person's box. His will be even more interesting since he had close to my level of access on the network.

The leap you read about.

Monday morning, I loaded Art of Strength Providence. I haven't done it in a while. Best I could usually do is through round 4. I made it through round 7. New personal best. I could have gone further, and I really wanted to quit after round 1, but between the bird, and the thrill of getting that far, and the hunger, since workout was before breakfast. I called it quits.

Monday night, I checked out the BJJ school. I liked it, it was fun. Interesting people. I think Yoga right now is the better choice for me. Between the cost, and the benefits.

Last night, was mad at TSD. I was in pain before getting there. It was hard and painful to change. My brother twisted his knee, so even in muscle pain, being exhausted and wanting to crash I carried him out to the car (he's only about 100lbs @ 26yo).

Still sore, and have Self defense in 15 minutes.

burning the candle at both ends, the lack of sleep and muscle pain from 2 really good MA workouts, and AOS Prov are catching up with me.

Peace

2 new students

So I had two new students in my Self Defense classes tonight.

The cute lady I have a small crush on from yoga was there for the Lady's class. I was running a little late, and came stumbling in, with all kinds of things in my arms. She was in there stretching out. The fact that she was there made me nervous. She seemed nervous the entire time. I think she was just reflecting back my nervousness to me... It was good though. Jumping jacks, ROM, squats and push-ups, basics, then did some break aways from grabs, and showed her a few things with the knife. Down side it was just me an her. So, being close to her, made me more nervous.

Second class had a new student. Female. It was pretty good. T, the guy there from last week practiced and you could tell. We covered a little knife, but did do the chokes. Which I said last week I'd show. They were both surprised at how easy it was. Warm up was he same as the first class. I didn't realize it until later, but I was soaked. I didn't think it was that warm either. Pants and shirt were both wet though.

Next week should be fun. Might even be more people. I can't wait to get equipment.

Self Defense Class. the first night.

Tonight was the first Self Defense class that I taught. Remember there are 2 classes. One at 7:30 for the Ladies, and one at 8:30 open to everyone.

I know there is an 18yo. who wants to take the class, but she works Wednesday nights. She's going to request them off so she can come to both classes though. I'll wait and see what happens. She works security for the complex, and was checking people's identification when they came into the building.

I spent the first 45 minutes standing around barefoot and just talking to the group that gathered outside the class room. The group was some guy there just to hang out watching tv in the common area of the club house. The finger printing lady, the security lady, my boss (the co-coordinator who showed up to check in on me) and someone there for finger printing. It was all good, about 8:15 a guy showed up for the mixed class. The coordinator didn't really mind, she knew it was going to be dead, and I got to learn more about the complex, and the way some things work. She also got a copy of my waiver and let me know she needs a copy of my sign in sheet. Which I'm going to convert to a spread sheet.

The finger printing lady when and got changed after she got off work, and there wasn't a lot she could do in 15 minutes. I feel bad I wanted to do better but there was just so little time to actually do any thing. Nothing got practiced, just showed her how to stand and gave her an idea of how to make a fist, block and punch.

The one guy that showed up for the 8:30 class. Pretty cool. He's in to a lot of different things. He's studied fighting before, but never took a class. He liked to be ready for anything. Not a dooms day guy, just a modern day Renascence man. He picked things up quickly. We did jumping jacks, burpees, Range of Motion, a shuffle drill. I taught him how to make a fist, what to strike with, did basic punches and kicks, and how to break free of a grab. We did knuckle push ups (only 5) to re-enforce which knuckles to punch with.

He was surprised to see it on the Calendar and in the news letter (which came you yesterday), and was worried it was going to be about making lots of noise and running away. I said no I will teach you to fight, you should already know how to make a lot of noise and try to avoid those situations. But we'll cover that too. My goal is to teach you enough to keep you from becoming a statistic.

So I have one die hard student already. It'll be great to get more. I have a good feeling. Now I could only focus and not be so nervous. It wasn't a case of I don't know where to start, it was a case of what to do next. I have so much stuff I've learned over 23 years (checked my test papers and certs, I started December 1985), that I don't know what to teach next. Next week a quick review on breaking away from a grab, and I'll show a couple of different ways to get out of a choke.

Today was just strange

This is cross posted between my LJ and My Blog

Tried to get up at 5am. Didn't work. Got up around 8:30. Went and paid rent. Then went and talked to the Coordinator, because she didn't call yesterday.

The Self Defense class is on. Next Wednesday at 7:30pm for the ladies, 8:30 for both sexes.

Leaving there, a guy whipped around a corner (we have medians with little turns in them to get into parking lots), didn't even bother trying to slow, I almost t-boned him. Then at the first light I had to turn at, a semi started fish tailing. Turned down another road and got 1/2 way to the road I needed, only to have it closed by an accident. 2 lane road, and the 2 cars took up the whole thing. Looked bad.

Ran by the post office, watched a cute break down about her package. Dropped off my Package going back to amazon for refund, and finally left for work. Get there, get told a server is down in our Louisville office. Called the Louisville tech to reboot the box, it's been flaky. Found out that the doors down there were broke. The mag locks would not disengage. So I got to spend time on the phone with him to figure out how to break into the computer room down there.

Other weird things most the day, like at lunch when I was given the wrong pager for my food, and they had to come find me, so they could give it to me. Then when I got ready to go, which takes about 15 minutes for me to do, the Help Desk Lady comes over and says the police are there.

Turn around there's a county sheriff deputy. Oo. He said they're was a 911 call and hang up from our building. He said they tried to call back, but couldn't get out of the automated system so they sent him out. We walked around, he said since he didn't hear any screaming he wasn't worried. It was either a wrong number or caused by the weather, which happens in the winter. He left, I figured I'd walk around some.

Went to carpet row first, since that's where the VPs, the Owners, the Directors and others like that sit. Saw my director was still there. Told him the cops were there because they got a 911 call. The look on his face was just pure worry would be the best way to say it. He went straight to 11. I had to calm him down quickly. We went over and talked to the Manufacturing Director and VP, then the four of us walked the building. Each person took a different area. We met back up and all was good.

So next week there will probably be a memo if you accidentally call 911, stay on the phone and tell them you got them by mistake.

So then I was getting ready to go again, and the MFG Director stops by says his guys can't get to the Manufacturing share on our network. Look, and the NAS heads crashed again. Spent the next 1.5 hours dealing with that.

Then home ward bound. Stopped to get some clothes for the Self Defense class. That and looking at toys and other things, took about an hour.

what's going on...

Bad news yesterday at work... But in all fairness to the people that pay me, I'll say no more until later. I have always stated my loyalty goes only as far as my paycheck. Very mercinary like of me, but that is the way I roll. I feel that today's companies don't care about the workers and only care about the $$$ in the bank. BOA showed us that, after they got the bail out and trying holding a conf call with right wing nutters, trying to block people's right to chose (Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)).

Last night I went to Martial Arts early. Got there a few minutes before 18:00 and dropped of the class' fit decks. Then went and changed. Did lots of push-ups in the kids class. I did somewhere around 150 or more last night. Plus my normal class workout, plus some planks (because I was tired of push ups and the person being punished can't do them anyway). 8 plank, 2 side planks. :)

Today more grind at work. I think most of us are still dealing with what was said yesterday. I expect some people to start looking for new jobs, but others don't. I know updating my resume has moved up on the list of things to do. Might actually start applying to them. I was talking about a job posting I saw today on Dice, manager and office mate were there. Manager asked why I was looking for a new job. Office Mate asked "Were you at the meeting yesterday did you hear what they said?" I shouldn't complain too bad I have a job.

I know, I'm being an ass right now... but it's a fine line and while this is supposed to be my space to vent, and the like, and I keep my employer's name out of it, I don't want to risk being fired.

Since I hadn't heard any thing back yet from the apartment complex, I went to the office today and talked to the coordinator. Her GM has been out sick, or so I was told, and she had yesterday off, so she was trying to catch up. It is looking like we're on to start NEXT WEDNESDAY!!! I have so much to do to get ready. However I'll get final word before 5pm tomorrow. Right now it looks like the first class (women's self defense) will be at 7:30, and co-ed self defense will be at 8:30. Which means i'll get done at 9:30. I feel bad for my parrot. He'll be stuck in his cage all that time. :(

My workout tonight was push-ups from the 100 push up challenge. Week 2, day 2. I cut the rest down to 60 seconds instead of 90. Might not be a good idea, but I wanted them done with.

I'm a lazy git.

Met with the Event person today. she was nice. I submitted a proposal for the self defense classes. Don't know if I like the way they pay, or the amount I'm asking. I have a feeling either way I'm going to end up on the short end of the deal. I might actually call and ask a tax professional or lawyer about the way they pay. The "it's tax free" bothers me. Its not pay as such, as it is a credit on my rent.

did some grease the groove pull ups tonight. Sets of 5 with the band. I've lost ground without the band. Can't get back to one yet. Back to nose barely clears. Can clear it from a standing position, shorter Range of Motion.

Just did the pull ups for the 100 pull program. Week 1 day 2. Did 60 seconds rest instead of 90 like they say.

Did:
10

8
8
16 (they said at least 12).

My shoulders burn now.

Haven't Done ETK since I messed up my ankle. :-(
Like I said, I'm lazy.

I feel great

Yoga wasn't as hard as normal tonight. I was the most advanced person there. Kind of sad. The really good yoga lady wasn't there tonight. She had something else to do. The Yoga instructor was the lady one that we've had all month.

There is more interest in my Self Defense class. One of the new people at Yoga tonight is a security guard here. She heard about it Saturday, when I was trying to find the Coordinator. She asked tonight where I studied. I said Allen Park. Too far for her, but the yoga lady said they they could take it there. I had to put the breaks on it there. There is a difference between a Martial Arts Class, and a Self Defense class...

SD - how to punch, kick, block and run away.

MA - History, philosophy, discipline, formality, forms, language, and testing and belts.

But there is interest going around.
